Goma is a city of 160,000 people located on the shores of Lake Kivu in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, just across the border from Gisenyi, Rwanda. Goma is the capital city of the North Kivu province and has suffered devastating effects from the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 as well as a volcanic eruption of nearby Mt. Nyiragongo in 2002. Because of internal conflict within the D.R. Congo in recent years, many IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps have been established in and around Goma. Shalom Shiloh has established a small medical clinic in Goma to try to help the people in the area who may not be able to afford medical care at a larger clinic or a hospital.
This clinic has done much to help many impoverished people in Goma as well as many refugees from Rwanda during the genocide and, more recently, many IDPs who are living in the camps in Goma. The church has purchased a piece of land on which they hope to build a larger, more permanent structure to house the clinic but funds are needed to get this project underway. If you are interested in helping out with this need, please contact us.
Currently the church does not have its own school but they would like to start one at some point in the future. There are many children in the church, in the surrounding neighborhood, and also in the IDP camps who need help to be able to attend school. You can sponsor a child in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for as little as $10.00 per month! Please visit our Sponsorship Program page to learn more!
