Rwankuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Rwankuba (also known as Rwanguba) is located in a very remote part of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are approximately 15,000 people scattered about the area of the entire zone with just a small settlement at the "heart" of Rwankuba. This area has seen much conflict in recent years and many people have had to flee when fighting has erupted. (right) Rwankuba settlement is just visible on the hillside in the center of this photo
In the center of Rwankuba is a former mission station. This home was the home of the missionaries of the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society, now known as World Venture. This home is still being used by staff of the Rwankuba Hospital. Rwankuba is also the original home of Pastor Stephen Bamuleke and his associate, Pastor Ernest Hategeka.
Rwankuba Hospital was founded by the missionaries in 1938 and is still being used for its original purpose. Most, if not all, of the current employees are Congolese nationals. The hospital is one of the only places of employment in the area. (right) Rwankuba hospital is the building with the red roof on the left side of this photo.
Most of the people who live in the area of Rwankuba are subsistence farmers. It is a very poor area with only the hospital and some schools to provide any jobs for people in the area. (left) "Downtown Rwankuba"
The hospital is currently being supported by an NGO and most of the schools are supported by the government but a teacher's salary is very minimal. The need for more assistance in this area is great. (right) The public phone of Rwankuba

There is still a relationship between World Venture and the Baptist Churches in this area and Shalom Ministries is currently forming a partnership with these Baptist churches. As a result of poverty and internal conflict, there are many children in the Rwankuba area who need help to be able to attend school. You can sponsor a child in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for as little as $10.00 per month! Please visit our Sponsorship Program page to learn more!
Primary school in the Democratic Republic of the Congo consists of grades 1 through 6, and their school year has 3 terms. The first term starts in September and runs through December, the second term starts in January and runs through March, and the third term starts in April and runs through June.
In January of 2009, 37 children from the area of Rwankuba in the D.R. Congo were added to the Sponsorship Program of His Hands for Africa.
